5th Shimadzu Global Pharma Summit 2015 Sees 200 Global Pharma Leaders Find Ways To 'Face Regulatory Challenges With Confidence' In Singapore.

November 25th – November 27th, 2015: The pharma industry is often plagued by hurdles that severely stifle their growth. Shimadzu's corporate philosophy is "Contributing to Society Through Science and Technology" and it understands the importance and contributions made by the Pharma industry in helping to keep this world free from diseases. The Shimadzu Pharma Summit Series is a platform that Shimadzu provides to the global pharma industry as a way to reiterate Shimadzu's commitment towards its philosophy and also to the global pharma industry.

The 5th Shimadzu Global Pharma Summit 2015 was organized by Shimadzu (Asia Pacific) Pte Ltd from November 25 to November 27, 2015 at the Marina Bay Sands in Singapore to address the various regulatory hurdles that are being currently faced by the pharma industry. The summit, which is a first of its kind organized by an analytical instrument manufacturer anywhere in the world, witnessed participation from 202 global pharma leaders, from 108 global pharma organisations, from 16 countries in Asia, US and Europe. All of these individuals were either CXOs, Managing Directors, Directors, Presidents, Vice Presidents or belonged to other key decision-making positions.

The display of Shimadzu's strength at the summit in the form of its state-of-the art technology solutions and instruments or its ability to gather the key opinion leaders of the pharma industry from across the world under one roof; helped build an unforgettable brand image in the minds of the customers.

The summit, which is one-of-its-kind networking event, also helps develop deeper ties with existing customers and establish new business contacts as well.

Theme

Every edition of the Shimadzu Pharma Summit focusses on the most pertinent issues that are plaguing the pharma industry at that time. The Pharma Summit Series that was started in the 2007 has come a long way in terms of its scope and grandeur, with each edition being bigger and better that the previous. In the current year, the most pertinent hurdled being faced by the pharma industry is that pertaining to challenges from regulatory organisations. Shimadzu thus decided to come up with the theme of "Face Regulatory Challenges With Confidence" for the 5th Shimadzu Global Pharma Summit 2015.

The 5th Shimadzu Global Pharma Summit 2015 witnessed participation from pharma industry leaders from across the world. Keeping in mind the extensive knowledge that these eminent individuals already possessed and the niche subject of regulatory compliance, it became imperative that Shimadzu had to source the best subject matter experts from across the world, if the content of the summit was to be made valuable enough for the already enlightened audience.

The 5th edition of the summit saw some of the best knowledgeable experts that gathered under Shimaduz's roof for the first-time ever, with two experts who spent their entire lives working on / with FDA. While one was a former medical officer with the US FDA, the other was a subject matter expert with over 30 years of experience in addressing FDA hurdles.

Summary of event deliberations

The 5th Shimadzu Global Pharma Summit 2015, which was themed "Face Regulatory Challenges With Confidence", kick-started on 25th November with an evening networking cocktail between all the participants, speakers, panellists, moderators and various members of the Shimadzu family.

This was held at the multi-tiered restaurant, located at level 55 of the Marina Bay Sands, which is called CÉ LA VI. The world renowned restaurant not only provided a breath-taking bird's eye view of Singapore city but also a great platform for the participants to network, share, discuss and get acquainted with each other before the big event the next day.

The main conference of the summit was held on 26th November. The summit started with a futuristic laser-enabled Exordium by Mr Prem Anand, Senior GM, Shimadzu (Asia Pacific) Pte Ltd, Singapore. This was followed by a warm Welcome Address by Mr Kiminobu Imura, MD, Shimadzu (Asia Pacific), Singapore, an inspiring Chairman's Address by Mr Akira Nakamoto, Chairman, Shimadzu Corporation, Japan, and a first-of-its kind opening ceremony using a laser show that portrayed not only the glorious legacy of Shimadzu but also the essence behind the pharma summit series.

Mr Nakamoto highlighted that, "I would like to take this opportunity to extend our sincere and heartfelt gratitude for your patronage towards our products and the many ways in which you continue to extend your support to us. The pharma summit series witnessed its first-ever keynote address by an eminent individual associated directly with the US FDA. The keynote was delivered by Dr Dave (Dai) Li, ex-medical officer, US FDA & Founder, Next BioResearch Services, US, on "Face Regulatory Challenges with Confidence: A precision medicine perspective".

The wide range of speakers, moderators and panellists at the summit deliberated over 3 sessions including:
Session 1: Regulatory challenges faced by Generics 
Session 2: Regulatory challenges faced by Innovators
Session 3: Regulatory challenges faced by CRAMS (Contract Research and Manufacturing Services)

The event also saw an extensive panel Discussion in the form of a 'Regulatory Round Table', featuring the earlier mentioned panellists and speakers, who discussed the "Challenges being faced during regulatory audits and how to address them".

This year's pharma summit also saw the unveiling and live display of Shimadzu's LabTotal with much fanfare using a "Kabuki curtain drop".

LabTotal is Shimadzu's smart service network based on the latest technology of "Internet of Things". This was followed by a live enactment of how customers can travel to any part of the world and yet be completely connected and in control of their instruments using LabTotal.

Interestingly, one of Shimadzu's valuable customer, Mr Ravi Kalla, Head, Information Technology, Anthem BioSciences, India, volunteered to be a part of the enactment, where he showed how using his smart device (iPad), he could access his lab's network from the event venue using LabTotal.

The 5th Shimadzu Global Pharma Summit 2015 also saw the ceremonial bestowing of the 2015 Frost & Sullivan Asia Pacific Mass Spectrometry Company of the Year Award by Ms Rhenu Bhuller, Partner & Senior Vice President, Frost & Sullivan, Singapore, to Mr Kiminobu Imura, Managing Director, Shimadzu (Asia Pacific) Pte Ltd, and Ms Sandhya Nargund, Manager, MS & Chromato, Shimadzu (Asia Pacific) Pte Ltd, amidst the blast of colour confetti cannons.

The conference was followed by a sumptuous gala dinner at The Ballroom of Faber Peak restaurant, Singapore. The gala dinner witnessed further networking between the participants amidst an array of entertainment activities that included a group dance by Shimadzu staff, a Magic Show and other group-oriented games.

Furthermore, the participants were given a laboratory tour of the Customer Support Centre (CSC) at Shimadzu (Asia Pacific)'s facility on 27th November. The tour was arranged for overseas delegates of about 90 to 100 peoples in two batches. After a brief introduction to the CSC's team, goals and key roles played in customers and solution development, the visitors went into the lab and interacted with CSC staff and product specialists, and were showcased the latest advanced technology that is being offered by Shimadzu. The interaction during the tour was very active and overall impression was excellent.
