NYP-SHINE 2.0: Advancing Science Through Strategic Collaboration

NYP Shimadzu MOU Signing 2022

About Nanyang Polytechnic-Shimadzu Innovation & Education Centre (NYP-SHINE 2.0)

On 19 July 2022, Nanyang Poytechnic and Shimadzu (Asia Pacific) came together to renew their partnership by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to launch NYP-SHINE 2.0 (Nanyang Polytechnic-Shimadzu Innovation & Education Centre 2.0)

The strategic intent of this industry-academia partnership is to provide relevant and purposeful training opportunities for regional professionals, NYP students, and staff. The collaboration will jointly develop innovations and knowledge that aims to enhance people's quality of life.

It will also see the establishment of Shimadzu Empowered E-Learning @ NYP (SEE@NYP) which is set to value-add students' education through e-learning experiences and equip the young talents with in-demand scientific skills.

SEE@NYP is a game-changing initiative in science education which intends to move away from a subject-based model teaching to a competency-based model that aims to train students with the technical know-how and equip them with the soft skills, e.g., public speaking skills, to provide an all-rounded training necessary for professional work in the future.

03 Achieving More with the Renewed MoU

NYP-SHINE: The Beginning

On 9 July 2018, the Nanyang Polytechnic-Shimadzu Innovation and Education Centre (NYP-SHINE) was officially opened. This momentous occasion was witnessed by Mr Edward Ho, Deputy Principal of NYP and Mr. Akira Nakamoto, Former Chairman of the Board, Shimadzu Corp.

This collaboration allowed NYP students to learn how to chemically test for components in a product sample with the help of Shimadzu's UV-VIS Spectrophotometer.

This meant that the authenticity of TCM medicines, cosmetics, drugs and even Halal food could be verified within an hour. Since then, NYP and Shimadzu has been working closely to improve the efficiency of these processes.

A Continuous Partnership For the Future of Science

Shimadzu has played a pivotal role throughout Nanyang Polytechnic Food Safety Centre's anchor workshops and seminars since 2017. For example, in 2018, NYP-Shimadzu jointly conducted a workshop on "The Science of Brewing Herbal Tea" with members of the Singapore Chinese Druggists Association, where instrumental chemical analysis was used to determine the active ingredients of herbal teas brewed under various conditions.

Shimadzu has also actively supported the training programmes led by Nanyang Polytechnic International (NYPi) on topics such as Food Safety and Quality Management for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs-Singapore Corporation Programme (SCP) or Food Innovation and Technology to government officials from various countries, such as Cambodia, Vietnam, Myanmar, and Laos.
