New Phase Of Partnership To Also Feature Shimadzu Empowered E-Learning (SEE@NYP)

Singapore, 19th July 2022: In 2018, Nanyang Polytechnic (NYP) joined hands with Shimadzu (Asia Pacific) to establish a dedicated centre in Singapore – the NYP-Shimadzu Innovation & Education Centre (NYP-SHINE Centre) – to create scientific innovations and develop a talent pipeline in chemical analysis. The Centre was the beacon of scientific transformation for the last 4 years, enabling the academic community to attain mastery in the field.

Given the success of the first Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), NYP and Shimadzu (Asia Pacific) decided to further extend their collaboration for another 3 years. The new collaboration is named the NYP-SHINE 2.0 as it builds upon the previous MoU with the setting up of the NYP-SHINE Centre. The strategic intent of this partnership is aimed at providing relevant and purposeful training opportunities for regional professionals, and NYP students and staff.

Both parties will also co-develop curricula and explore co-teaching and co-certification, in accordance with the NYP Professional Competency Model (NYP-PCM) for chemical-analysis Competency Units. Additionally, joint workshops and seminars will be organised to benefit Pre-Employment Training (PET) and Continuing Education and Training (CET) learners.

The advent of the global pandemic led to a massive technology acceleration or “tech-celeration” across all sectors, where e-learning is now a permanent feature in the education industry. Following the renewal of the MoU, NYP also signed an agreement to establish the Shimadzu Empowered E-Learning @ NYP (SEE@NYP). As part of the agreement, Shimadzu (Asia Pacific) will provide technical information such as existing demo videos and course materials to support NYP’s new course curriculum development in analytical instrumentation and automation. The two partners will also co-certify selected courses.

Dr Joel Lee, Director of School of Applied Science at NYP said, “We are glad to have Shimadzu (Asia Pacific) onboard our NYP Professional Competency Model (NYP-PCM). Through this partnership, our Diploma in Applied Chemistry students and CET learners will benefit from the co-development of curricula and the co-certification of competencies in analytical chemistry, to ensure that they are equipped with the in-demand skills to excel in the field.”

Mr Prem Anand, Executive Officer and Senior General Manager, Shimadzu (Asia Pacific), said that “Today is a particularly historic day for both our organisations, since we will not only be signing the NYP-SHINE 2.0 MoU but also enter into an agreement to mark the official beginning of the Shimadzu Empowered E-Learning @ NYP (SEE@NYP).”

“While the NYP-SHINE 2.0 MoU builds upon our previous partnership in which we had set up of the NYP-Shimadzu Innovation & Education or NYP-SHINE Centre, SEE@NYP will allow us to join hands to provide technical information support to NYP’s new course curriculum development in analytical instrumentation and automation, support NYP with our demo videos and course materials and also do co-certification of selected courses,” he added.

Mr Tetsuya Tanigaki, Managing Director, Shimadzu (Asia Pacific) Pte Ltd said, “Shimadzu’s Corporate Philosophy is ‘Contributing to Society through Science and Technology’. Our renewed collaboration with Nanyang Polytechnic is yet another reiteration of this philosophy. We feel that the best way for contributing to the creation of a better world is to enable our teachers and students with the best world-class innovations. With the extension of our partnership, more students will have the opportunity to learn about our advanced technologies and be better prepared for their future employment in the scientific community. Shimadzu is always here to support our partners in their quest to provide the best training and education through ‘Excellence in Science’.”

The renewed agreement between NYP and Shimadzu (Asia Pacific) will focus on the use of Mass Spectrometry in Food Safety, including analysis of cultured meats and plant-based proteins, detection of dyes, veterinary drugs, veterinary diseases, preservatives, pesticides, heavy metals, and flavours. Other new areas may include applications in the chemistry of fragrances, pharmaceuticals, biologics (including mRNA vaccines), synthetic biology, cosmetics, natural products, and skin care ingredients. Moving forward, the Centre will not only undertake Research & Development projects with the industry but will also provide training (including regional ones) linked to food safety, chemical analysis of new emerging areas for professionals and students.
